Target Audience

Newbie gardeners or plant owners that want to learn about their plants, are interested in home decor and like to do all things by themselves. They’re into DIY projects and have curious spirits.

User Needs

  • Know how often should a specific plant be watered
  • Tell signs of alarm in a specific plant
  • Access information about plants in a clean and not technical way

Functionality Requirements

  • The user will be able to see all owned plants
  • The user will be able to get alerts of plant watering dates
  • The user will be able to browse and access to a simple plant database
  • The user will be able to add each plant owned

📓 Research

I did a quick research to know which kind of features are offered currently in plant care apps. I found there are many apps that cater to different kinds of users. The biggest differences are found in the way the information is displayed and how many information can be found about each kind of plant, but all apps let the user add as many plants as desired to the account.

Considering the goal of Iris would be to help new plant owners that are not interested in having a lot of technical information, I kept the functions at minimum for this first proposal. As a reference, I also considered the app Co – Star, know for targeting a similar kind of users but with the astrology topic.

🧠 Design Process

Having the user and functionality requirements, I created a list of the screens I would need to accomplish all of them and built a wireframe for each one.

Wireframes and relationships between them

👁️ Moodboard

To find the look & feel of the app, I assembled a moodboard inspired by the illustrations of Alfons Mucha, an Art Deco movement artist. With this ethereal and decorative style in mind, I added garden scenery to give the app a light and homely aura.

⚡ Proposal

Aesthetic

Iris, the plant-parent companion app, has a light and calm color palette. To help users keep their plants alive, it has a set of features like alerts and a calendar view that help through the task.

Plant profiles

The user can add to the app as many plants as wanted, adding a birthday (or purchase date) for each of them. After introducing the plant’s name the app would add a photo from the database and load all related information in cards.

Plantpedia

Iris has a plant database that can be used to find information about plants in general and discover new kinds of plants, using a search feature with keywords

🌟 Conclusions

The main challenge for this project was coming up with an image that was light and delicate but still modern, and the moodboard’s inspiration was a risk I took trying to create an different image from all other plant related apps I found during the research part of the project. However, I think I managed to make it work at the end and I also accomplished all design goals set up at the start of the project.
